Interne Rudeness
The Internet is full of places for people to express themselves in a multitude of ways. You can visit YouTube to showcase a talent through a shared video, post pictures in a multitude of places, visit a forum to post an opinion, or share private details on a blog.
For some reason, all of the sharing that people do brings out a darker side in some folks. Many behave differently than they would if they were speaking to someone in person, and become a bit more rude.
These people are often called trolls, when it comes to online terminology. It's Internet slang for someone who posts controversial or defamatory messages in hopes of inciting anger and emotion-driven responses. These are people that thrive off of upsetting others.
There haven't been studies as to why people "troll" and even if there was, how would you get accurate data? These "trolls" work hard to remain unknown in the vast sea that is the internet.
Video based websites like YouTube are somewhat different than sites where just writing is used. With YouTube, the user is more exposed to the public as they're actually showing themselves on camera. A trolls rudeness is then targeted at the appearance of the user as well as whatever information is in the video. It doesn't need to just be mean and hurtful comments coming from the trolls either. Some actually get posts concerning themselves in relation to nasty commentary.
These types of people are everywhere, and though we aren't positive as to why they do it, it may be because they are just venting. Just because there is a sense of anonymity on the Internet, people should quit feeling that it turns a place for social interaction and information into a giant playground. Believing this may lead to trouble for the trolls.
Even though you think no one can find you on the Internet, there are easy tools online that can do just that. Plugging in an IP address and bringing up it's location on a map, is the specialty of websites like ip-detective.net. With one sequence of numbers and one click of the mouse, your location can be mapped. Who you are dealing with and coming into contact with online is something that you cannot determine; they could be mentally unstable. You also don't know what will be their breaking point.
If you're a victim of a trolls' remarks, report them to someone in charge of the site you're using. Many places want to crack down on the hurtful posting and will quickly ban and disable these trolls' accounts. rudeness doesn't need to become an online norm. A good rule is that if you wouldn't say it to a person's face, you shouldn't be posting it online.
